Speaking out against hate directed at the Slymepit!

Let me introduce you to the Slymepit: it’s a web forum. That’s it!

I don’t know a huge amount about the history behind it, but I think it’s something to do with the blogger Abbie Smith from ERV. Nowadays, it’s known for being a kind of an “antidote” to sites like Freethought Blogs and Skepchick. I’ve been commenting there myself for a few weeks, and while the language can be a little colorful, I’ve found everyone there to be very welcoming, thoughtful and convivial. Most importantly, the people there aren’t at all judgemental! :)

But the mere existence of the Slymepit has seen the appearance of a logical fallacy that people like PZ Myers are fond of: posting on the Slymepit automatically makes you a hate-filled misogynist worthy of banning. It isn’t just PZ Myers, it seems Ophelia Benson is also intent on painting the Slymepit as some sort of boogeyman.

This irrational hatred against the Slymepit and it’s members has to stop if the current skeptic mess is ever going to be resolved. Next time someone says anything bad about the Slymepit I suggest that you actually go to it and check the evidence for yourself! :)

I did just that. Every single thread I looked at was full of mean-spirited, gratuitous, and sometimes dishonest attacks on “baboons” and A+ers. It just seemed like a forum for bullies.

Wandering around on the slymepit, I was struck by the fact that a lot of posts seemed to be written by preteen boys obsessed by “those yucky girls with their yucky girl parts”. They also seem to take delight in using nasty language like kids who have just discovered dirty words for the first time. In addition I saw disturbing obsessive, bullying and stalking behavior directed a a few “uppity” women.
